I am woman that wears many hats. Because of this I cross many barriers. This is seen in my artwork and personal life. I was born in Bronx, New York to Jamaican migrants and raised in Orlando, FL. My passion for art started with fashion, in which I hold a degree. Then my passion ventured off into painting and photography. Although we say “painter” I dabble in using different mediums. I don’t believe art should be put in a box, or anyone should be confined to one medium. I am a creator. My painting style was influenced by Georgia O’Keefe.
To me art is a form of release. Sometimes I get lost in mypaintings and photography. It helped me heal during the most trying times in my life and continues to do so. When I create,I’m able to shut down my mind and let my soul do the talking. I love using vibrant and bold colors because I am an island girl. But also, in my spiritual journey I realized that nothing is left to chance and even colors have a meaning and a story behind it. I hate naming my pieces because I want you to come up with your own story when you see my work. What is my work telling you? What feeling is it invoking in you? What part of you is it reaching and possibly healing? What are the colors and the flowers saying to you? My work has grown and changed over the years as I have. It’s been more daring, more layers have been added, more depth. I can’t wait to see what levels it will take me to next and how it may heal others, as much as it’s healed me.
As for photography. I realized in this busy chaotic world; people don’t take the time to stop and see the beauty in life. I don’t remember when I fell in love with photography. I just knew that I wanted to travel and take pictures of beautiful things all over the world. I bought my first DSLR in 2013. It’s funny because sometimes I use my Samsung cell phone more than my actual camera. I stop and take pictures all the time. So, using my phone is more convenient. I do have a professional camera now. But sometimes I don’t have time to stop and change the aperture and make sure all the settings are correct. I need to capture the image just the way I see it before I lose sight of the image I’m trying to capture.
My photography may not be like others. I find beauty in places people may not see it. My mother once said to me we are in the same place and looking at the same things, but somehow you capture images that I would never pay attention to. That’s what I want my photos to do. To capture beauty in the world that no one pays attention to.
